The Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Adu-Twum, has commended the Students’ Representative Council of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST SRC) of its effort in providing financial assistance and engaging stakeholders to support the over 6000 students who were compelled to defer their course due to their inability to pay their fees.

Speaking at a presser, the Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Adu-Twum, thanked the university management for suspending the deferal directive. He also commended the steps and willingness of the SRC to mobilise funds to pay the fees of students deferred by the University.

“I’m so much touched by the work of the SRC. They came up with monies to support their friends and colleagues”, he noted.

On Wednesday 20th April, Thriller News GH reported that about 6000 students in the university have been compelled to defer their course due to their inability to pay their fees.

The issue got to the attention of the public and social media users took to Twitter to show their dissatisfaction against management’s decision to defer the 6000 students over non-payment of fees.

Following the deferral directive, the Michael Abuah-led Students’ Representative Council (SRC) swiftly engaged the authorities to agree that the affected students who could pay their fees would have their deferment reverted.

“The SRC within last 24 hours has been on its toes to address major issues concerning students who advocacy, the SRC has been able to ensure that students who pay their fees will have their deferment reverted,” part of a statement released by the SRC on April read.

Subsequently, the students were asked to take advantage of the opportunity and try to settle their outstanding arrears.

Efforts by the KNUST SRC to assist students affected by the deferral directive

The SRC also requested GH¢50,000 to assist needy students to pay their fees to help save them from deferring their courses.

Through the SRC’s further engagement with relevant stateholders, the Education Minister stepped in to add his voice to the situation.

Finally, management of the university has extended the deadline for the payment of fees for 6,000 deferred students by a month.
