KNUST SRC donates pickup to KNUST Police Service to beef up off-campus security

The Students Representative Council of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST SRC) on Wednesday February 2, 2022 donated a pickup to the KNUST Police Service to aid the security operations off-campus.

The vehicle was handed over to officials of the Police Service on behalf of the Students Representative Council by the President, Michael Abuah, in a short presentation ceremony at the Transport section of the University.

Present at the ceremony were The Oforikrom Municipal Police Commander, KNUST Police Commander and other officers both from Management and the SRC.

BACKGROUND

The Students Representative Council of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST SRC) promised to purchase 2 new pickup trucks for KNUST Police Service.

The SRC Financial Secretary, Derek Andy Dadzie who revealed this in Parliament on Sunday January 23 during his first semester budget reading said it will help maximize off-campus security.

“Mr. Speaker, I know my friends and honorable members from the Non-residential caucus will be excited to hear this; as part of the SRC’s commitment to augment Security off campus, two pickups would be purchased for the KNUST Police Service. Our checks indicate that 1 vehicle will cost about GHC 48,000.00. Hence the estimated budget to see to the implementation of this project will amount to GHC 96,000.00”, he said.

Pending the approval of the 2021/2022 SRC Budget statement by the Parliamentary Council, the SRC has been able to quickly facilitate this imperative initiative today having in mind that a high percentage of students reside off campus and are prone to security threats or dangers especially in the night.

The Police Command after inspection and acceptance of the vehicle, expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the KNUST SRC for this intiative to improve security off campus as a shared social responsibility for students and inhabitants and pledged to operationalise the vehicle solely for its intended purpose after full brandishing.
