BREAKING: KNUST abolishes JCR Hall Management by Students; No more Hall elections effective 2023/24 academic year

Management of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has cancelled its Junior Common Room (JCR) system of Hall Management by students.

The decision follows the clashes between residents of the Unity Hall and the University Hall which left several vehicles damaged.

According to a release signed by the Registrar/Secretary to the University Council, A.K Boateng, Management of the University has taken the decision to abolish the JCR system of hall management by students. This means there would be no students’ elections for Hall executives with effect from 2023/2024 academic year.

The decision was taken during an emergency meeting by the University Council on Friday, 26th August, 2022.

“With effect from the 2023/2024 Academic Year, the Junior Common Room (JCR) System of Hall Management by students, is ABOLISHED. This means, there would be no Students’ elections for hall executives. The existing governance structure comprising Hall Councils, Hall Masters and Senior Tutors, would continue to operate in the management of the alfairs of the Halls. In addition, Hall Fellows will be appointed and assigned to floors/blocks of the Halls to exercise direct supervision over matters affecting students”, the statement said.

Meanwhile, Hall Week and SRC Week Celebrations have been SUSPENDED INDEFINITELY by the University.
