Dean of Students’ Affairs of the University of Ghana, Professor Godfred Alufar Bokpin, says that his suggestion for an online election to be held to elect new executives of the Students Representative Council was shot down by student leaders.

Whilst he says that the appointment of SRC executives is constitutionally right, he believes that an online election would have been more appropriate to choose SRC executives for the 2020/2021 academic year.

Speaking on Campus Exclusive on Thursday, July 2, 2020, the Dean said that although the University of Ghana Computing System was ready to offer assistance with the process, he was told that students do not trust it.

“The constitution allows for the appointment of interim executives but I first proposed the idea of online election. Both the clerk, the SRC executive and the speaker said it cannot be because the students don’t trust it and said no let’s start off from this way,” he said.

This follows the failure of the SRC to hold elections to elect new principal officers for the 2020/2021 academic year.

In anticipation of the expiration of the tenure of office of the Isaac Agyemang led administration, the Executive Committee comprising all active Junior Common Room (JCR) Presidents have triggered Article 25 of the SRC constitution.

In circumstances where the SRC is unable to organize an election and the tenure of an incumbent officer is about to expire article 25 clause 7 a. i. allows for ‘One of the JCR Presidents of the Halls of residence as Acting SRC President’.

In line with that, JCR President of the Akuafo Hall, Nana Amo Ntow Fianko was appointed as the interim SRC President for the 2020/2021 academic year.

Additionally, the Secretary to the Mensah Sarbah Hall JCR, Rubby Nkansah was also appointed as acting SRC General Secretary in line with subclause two of article 25 (7).
