AFCON: Ivory Coast eliminates defending champions Senegal in penalty shootout

The Elephants of Ivory Coast have kicked out the Taranga Lions of Senegal in a 5-4 victory during a penalty shootout.

Victory came for the Ivorians on Monday when they locked horns with the 2022 AFCON champions, Senegal at the Yamoussoukro stadium after 90 minutes of play which ended on 1-1 for both teams and had to be transitioned into an extra time of play.

With no goals in extra time, the game had to be separated through a penalty shootout.

While in the shootout, a strike from Habib Diallo was cancelled out by a penalty kick converted by Frank Kessie.

Following this victory in Round 16 stage of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament, the Ivorians will now advance to the quarter-finals of the 2023 AFCON while Senegal exits from the competition.
