The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) has declared a nationwide strike effective Monday, January 29, 2024.
The action is in protest of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission’s alleged contempt for their terms of employment.
The association’s general secretary, Richard Afriyie, stated that even though the leadership of the association has been called by the National Labour Commission (NLC) to a meeting on Wednesday, January 31, the strike will take effect.
“We have directed our people to lay down their tools until further notice. So until then, we are beginning it. There hasn’t been any disregard for any directive. We have been asked to appear before NLC to discuss the matter on Wednesday,” Richard Afriyie said.
Mr. Afriyie noted that the association haven’t yet met with the commission to find out what awaits them but it has since have made this declaration and would abide by it.
“We have not yet gone to appear before them to know what is in store for us. And we cannot just be called off by any opinion, based on any emotion, or whatever. It is a collective decision we have taken, and we need to comply with that,” he added.
