
According to a press statement released from the Communications Directorate at Ghana’s Jubilee House on Jan. 24, Major General Thomas Oppong-Peprah has been appointed as Chief of Defence Staff, effective Feb. 1.
“The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has appointed the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, as Chief of Defense Staff, effective Thursday, February 1, 2024,” part of the press statement said.
According to the release, the new appointment was made in line with the terms of Article 212 of Ghana’s Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State.
The release said, the appointment comes as Vice Admiral Seth Amoama, the present Chief of Defense Staff is set to retire from the Ghana Armed Forces.
His retirement will take place on Thursday, Feb. 1 having completed his term of duty.
Additionally, the President has designated Major General Bismarck Kwasi Onwona to succeed Major General Thomas Oppong-Peprah as Chief of Army Staff. This will take effect on Feb. 1.
Prior to receiving his new position, Major General Onwona served as the Commandant of the Staff College and Ghana Armed Forces Command.
