Former member of parliament for the Asutifi North Constituency, Hon. Benzahin Joseph Dahah has entreated parents to prioritize the rights of their children.
The former lawmaker made the appeal during his speech during the 31st December Watch Night Service at the Satellite Church of Christ.
He admonished parents and guardians not to be ignorant of the Children’s Act in the constitution of Ghana but rather seek to understand that even though the children are theirs, they are the government and nation’s property.
Hon. Joseph Dahah entreated parents and the congregants to make sure their children are not taken through any income earning endeavor while they are below the working age enshrined in the constitution.
He also emphasized on the rights of the children to decide the religion or worship they prefer.
“The child has the right to decide on which worship or religion to join. You do not have to prevent him or her from that choice. Even at the age of 18, it is the right of your child to decide whether to worship with you the parent or choose otherwise. This is because the children also are entitled to the right to religion”, he said.
According to him, a child has every right to report a parent or guardian who by virtue of biological authority prevents them from quality education and safe environment.
He, therefore, implore parents to acknowledge the rights and freedoms of their children as law abiding citizens and never to ignore the potency of the government and the law.
