Background
The 2021 KNUST SRC elections which was initially scheduled to take place on 14th July was suspended by management of the University following an incident that took place at the Great Hall of the University involving members from the Unity Hall, popularly known as Conti, and the University Hall (Katanga).
The clash resulted in the injury of some students and the destruction of some school properties.
The Deputy Registrar of the University Relations Office at KNUST, Dr. Daniel Bekoe in a press release on Sunday, July 4, 2021, stated that all activities leading to the 2021 SRC elections have been suspended with immediate effect.
The press release further stated that during the incident, one student sustained some minor injuries in his palm from a broken bottle and is currently receiving treatment at the University’s hospital.
Additionally, the incident resulted in the destruction of some chairs, glass doors, and flower pots at the Great Hall.
Management of the University also disclosed that a committee is to be set up to investigate the matter and hold the culprits accountable.
Finally, the 2021 SRC election is all set to come off on ……
There are 14 aspirants vying for the portfolios as President, General-Secretary, Financial Secretary and Women’s Commissioner.
Although there is a gender imbalance with respect to those vying for the four available offices, ultimately the election will see two women elected for the office of General Secretary and Women’s Commissioner, with the men taking the position of President and Financial Secretary.
This is because all the eight (8) men contesting in the election are either going for the Presidential office or the position of Financial Secretary with the six (6) women in the race vying for either General Secretary or Women’s Commissioner.
