Patron of the Bush canteen at the University of Ghana, Mr. Jonas Opoku has called on the management of the University to make awareness of the existence of the canteen during orientation programs for newly admitted students.
According to him, new students do not recognize the existence of the canteen and this has been a major challenge to them.
“Bush canteen is one of the oldest markets where you can get everything yet new students mostly do not know it exists on campus. Maybe it’s because of where it’s located but we call on management to mention us to students during orientations” he said.
Mr. Opoku added that the emergence of the covid-19 and the University’s modular system has destroyed their business.
“When all students were on campus our sales were better than having level 100s and 400s this past semester”.
“But I think it is because the level 100 students don’t know about the canteen as I earlier mentioned so we are optimistic that when our regular customers thus the level 200 and 300 students report to the school, our businesses will find their feet ”he added.
Regarding covid-19 safety protocols, Mr. Opoku reiterated that patrons at the canteen have made conscious efforts in getting students to adhere.
He added that the traders do not encourage any form of group discussions at the canteen.
“We have veronica buckets at the entrance and inside the canteen where students wash their hands before entering, we make sure every student wears the mask before attending to them and we do not encourage any group studies at all.
We have had cases where students come in a group to eat and have some chats after eating but we’ve made them know that we are not on normal terms so they have to really observe the social distances” he explained.
