As part of our 2025 Graduate School Series, this edition takes a critical look into one of the most important documents in any graduate school application—the Statement of Purpose, often referred to simply as SOP.

Whether you’re applying for a master’s or PhD program, the SOP plays a crucial role in your application to universities in the U.S. and Canada.

It is your opportunity to tell the admissions committee who you are, what motivates you, and why you’re a strong fit for the program.

What is a Statement of Purpose?

The Statement of Purpose is a personal essay that introduces your academic and professional background, outlines your motivation for pursuing graduate study, and explains how the program aligns with your goals.

It’s where you connect the dots between your past experiences, present interests, and future aspirations.

Although it may sound simple, writing a compelling SOP is no easy task. It requires patience, careful thought, strong organization, and a clear sense of purpose.

Most importantly, it needs to be tailored to each program you’re applying to.

It is important to note that,  there is no single way to write an SOP. It can vary in structure, tone, and style depending on your story and the type of program you’re applying to.

However, based on conversations with graduate program directors and admissions committee members across North America, we’ve identified key insights into what they typically look for in an SOP.

What Admissions Committees Want to See

A program director at a major U.S. university shared with Thriller News GH that their admissions committee evaluates SOPs based on the following five key areas:

  1. Clarity and originality of your academic or research goals

  2. Alignment with the department’s faculty, curriculum, and resources

  3. Motivation and preparation for graduate-level work

  4. Strength of writing and communication skills

  5. Potential for teaching or contributing to the academic community

Generally, these five criteria are what many programs look for in a strong SOP.

Whether you’re applying for a research-intensive PhD or a professionally focused master’s program, these areas help demonstrate that you’re ready for graduate school and that you’re a strong fit for the program.

For PhD applicants, you’re expected to show a clearer, more focused sense of your research goals. You should be able to articulate the kinds of questions that drive your academic curiosity and how you plan to explore them within the program.

While you don’t need to have a fully developed dissertation proposal, you should provide a sense of your interests—for example:

What kind of independent research would you like to pursue? Are there papers you’ve written in the past that could evolve into a larger project? Are there faculty in the program you’re applying to whose research aligns closely with your own goals?

On the other hand, master’s applicants, especially those applying to professional or terminal master’s programs, may not need to outline detailed research plans.

However, having a clear sense of your academic interests, goals, and why you’re pursuing the degree is expected. You should explain what you hope to gain from the program and how it connects to your broader career or academic path.

Length and Formatting: Follow the Rules

Different programs have different requirements regarding the length and format of the SOP. Some programs request 500 words, others ask for 1000 words or a two-page limit. These guidelines are usually clearly stated on the program’s website.

Respect these limits. Submitting a four-page SOP when the program asks for 500 words can work against you, no matter how strong your content is. Admissions committees review hundreds of applications, so sticking to the word or page count shows that you can follow instructions—a quality every graduate program values.

Tip: Focus on being concise. Don’t try to say everything. Say the most important things clearly and with intention.

Highlight Your Strengths and Fit

Your SOP should also highlight aspects of your profile that strengthen your candidacy—such as teaching experience, professional background, or skills relevant to your field. For example, if you have teaching experience, mention it. It can increase your chances of receiving a Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA).

Similarly, if you’ve worked on projects, written papers, or completed internships related to the field, use those examples to demonstrate how prepared and motivated you are.

Summary

While there is no single formula for writing the perfect SOP, the five criteria outlined above offer a useful roadmap.

Think of your SOP as a personal narrative that connects your past, present, and future in a way that is both reflective and forward-looking.

Write it in your own voice, but keep it structured, intentional, and aligned with the program you’re applying to.
