WASHINGTON  — Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken announced Monday that the United States will impose a new visa restriction policy aimed at individuals undermining democracy in Ghana.

The policy is set to take effect ahead of Ghana’s presidential and parliamentary elections on Dec. 7.

According to Blinken, the targeted restrictions are intended to support Ghana’s commitment to democratic values without impacting the Ghanaian people or their government.

“Ghana has achieved three decades of democratic elections and peaceful power transitions – a model to cherish,” Blinken said. “The United States stands ready to impose visa restrictions if needed to uphold the aspirations of all Ghanaians for an election that reflects the will of the people.”

The restrictions, enacted under Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, will apply to individuals suspected of election interference.

Activities deemed as “undermining democracy” include vote manipulation, violence, and intimidation aimed at suppressing freedoms of association and peaceful assembly.

Specific political representatives, voters, civil society members, or media personnel targeted by coercive tactics may also be covered under these restrictions. Certain family members of these individuals may likewise be affected.
