Popular American musician and songwriter Stevie Wonder has been conferred Ghanaian citizenship by President Akufo-Addo at a ceremony held at the Jubilee House in Accra.
The artiste, born Stevland Morris but famously known as Stevie Wonder, took the Oath of Allegiance and was presented with his Certificate of Citizenship, formalizing his status as a Ghanaian citizen.
It comes three years after he announced his decision to move to Ghana.
In a post on social media, Kow Essuman, the legal counsel to President Akufo-Addo, congratulated the celebrated musician for embracing Ghanaian citizenship.
“Stevie Wonder is officially Ghanaian. He has just taken the Oath of Allegiance and received the Certificate of Citizenship by Registration at Jubilee House. Congratulations, Sir and welcome to Ghana, Essuman said.”
Stevie Wonder is also celebrating his 74th birthday today, having been born on May 13, 1950.
Wonder is known globally as a multifaceted artist, excelling as a singer-songwriter, musician, and record producer.
His influence spans various music genres, including R&B, pop, soul, gospel, funk, and jazz, making him a pioneer in the music industry.
