Multichoice, a satellite television service provider in South Africa, has officially announced that the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) would not be broadcasted on its SuperSport channels.
A release by the company said “SuperSport Channels will not broadcast the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 scheduled for January 13th to February 11th, 2024 because the channel has not secured the rights to broadcast the tournament”.
The company noted that the games will only be available through its partner broadcast stations on Free to Air (FTA) channels.
However, customers and football enthusiasts have been assured of the availability of other services provided by the company.
“Multichoice Africa remains committed to ensuring football fans across Africa continue to enjoy unrivalled access to entertainment and football games available on DStv and GOtv platforms including, the Premier League, LaLiga, Serie A, Zambian Super League and many more of football’s most prestigious competitions,” it added.

Previously, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced in November that Togo-based New World TV had been granted a three-year contract. Hence, New World TV would be in charge for all of its football coverage.
The declaration led to the change of guard. It implied that beIN Sports had obtained the rights to broadcast the 2023 AFCON throughout the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) area.

New World TV, rather than SuperSport, would host the event throughout sub-Saharan Africa.
For Ghanaians, Ghana’s state-owned broadcaster, Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) would broadcast AFCON 2023 free-of-charge on its sports and other channels.
