The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has withheld subject results of some candidates from 235 schools due to the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in answering questions during the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
Following the release of the 2023 provisional WASSCE results on Monday, 18th December,2023, WAEC cancelled some subject results of 3,647 candidates who are suspected to have used unauthorized materials like prepared notes, textbooks, and printed resources inside the examination halls.
839 candidates also have their results nullified for possessing mobile phones within the examination premises with the subject results of some 4,280 candidates being withheld and the entire results of 1,005 candidates also being withheld due to various suspected violations.
That notwithstanding, WAEC has also barred the results of 4,878 candidates due to failure to return educational materials provided to them by their respective schools.

Whiles the examination council has initiated investigations into the various allegations, it has, however, cautioned parents and guardians of candidates against the engagement of the services of individuals who promises to assist them in upgrading the results of their wards.
“The Council would like to caution all its stakeholders to be wary of fraudsters who promise to upgrade results for a fee. Candidates are to note that WAEC results are secured and can be authenticated using its results verification system. The WAEC QR code can be downloaded and used to verify results”, WAEC cautioned.
