The motion by 5 MPs requesting Parliament to constitute a bi-partisan committee to thoroughly review the processes and the procedures adopted by the Electoral Commission in the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections, is apt according to a senior Lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr Ali Yakubu Nyaaba.
Speaking on Midday news on TV3 and monitored by Thrillernewsgh.com, Dr. Ali Nyaaba said though the lead members of the motion are NDC MPs, “if we look at it from a non-partisan perspective, it’s apt and can help enhance electoral processes in Ghana moving forward”.
His comment follows a motion filed by 5 NDC members of Parliament for a comprehensive probe into the 2020 general elections.
The Members behind the motion are MP for Asawase, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, MP for Bolga East, Dr Dominic Ayine, MP for Akatsi South, Bernard Ahiafor, Buem MP, Kofi Adams and MP for Salaga South, Zuweira Ibrahimah.
Commenting on the issue, Dr. Ali Nyaaba explained how different this motion is as compared to the NDC’s 2020 general election petition.
“The 2020 election petition was a political party seeking its interest. That’s the NDC wanted something that would turn the election results around. In this particular instance, they are talking about electoral irregularities and if we look at it together from a non-partisan perspective, it’s something that is useful and can help enhance elections in Ghana moving forward. We shouldn’t be looking at it as a political party issue anymore”.
Speaking on how far the motion will go, he said it depends on its objectivity and how both the minority and majority would embrace it.
“It is difficult to predict because, I cannot pinpoint any precedence. But how far it will go depends on the objectivity of the motion and how the other side of the national Parliament will embrace it. If it becomes a national issue, Thus something that both sides are interested in considering the motion’s objectivity, then it will help us iron out some of the challenges that is associated with our elections”, he added.
