The University of Ghana is likely to be plunged into total darkness in the next 72-hours should it fail to settle its debt GHC33m with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
A disconnection notice has been served on the university, and any further delay will leave the power distributor with no option than to plunge the university into darkness.

This comes after the ECG notified some state institutions in the country that their power supply will be cut if they fail to settle their debt.
The exercise is aimed at cleaning ECG’s debt data as well as recovering monies that customers owe the power service provider.
Aside from the University of Ghana, ECG had earlier threatened to cut power to some state institutions like the Ministry of Finance, Economic and Organised Crime Office ( EOCO) over their inability to settle their debt of GHC 421,038.02 and the Internal Audit Agency with a GHC545,740.68 debt as of April 1, 2022.
Reports state that the University of Ghana has two metering systems and it owes the national power grid GHS10,926,147.53 and GHS22,102,459.04 on both meters.
According to sources, the university’s last payment was about GH¢10.5 million in January 2021.
The Electricity Company of Ghana has taken on some other big institutions like the University of Professional Studies, Accra by cutting power to its administration block and auditorium over a GH1.6 million debt.
ECG urged the institutions to pay their debts to prevent further mortification.
