The University Teachers Association of Ghana has officially suspended its strike after Wednesday’s meeting with the government.
The suspension of the industrial action, which commenced at the beginning of this month, is to pave way for negotiations with the government to begin.
In a letter signed by both the National President, Prof. Charles Marfo, and National Secretary, Dr. Eric K.K Abavare, of the Association, lecturers were admonished to return to work.
The Association has agreed to return to the negotiating table from Monday, August 23, 2021, for a mandatory period of one month.
It is hopeful that the government will heed their demands by the end of the one-month negotiation period.
“It is our hope that the road map agreed to by the parties, which was an important condition for the suspension of the strike action, in addition to NLC’s withdrawal of the legal suits against UTAG, will be strictly followed by the government side of the negotiations,” part of the letter reads.
Items agreed to be negotiated on
According to a Memorandum of Understanding signed by parties present during Wednesday’s emergency meeting, it was agreed that the research component of the Book and Research Allowances, market premium and non-basic allowance for university lecturers were the items up for negotiation.
When are academic activities resuming?
Several tertiary institutions have announced the resumption of academic activities following the end of the UTAG-National Labour Commission impasse.
Management of the Ghana Institute of Journalism has informed its students that academic activities will resume on Friday, August 20, 2021.
