The Management of the University of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has, as a matter of urgency, revealed a strategic plan to curtail the accommodation challenges faced by students.
This comes at the back of a recent demonstration against what the students of the University describes as, ‘killer increment’ in charges for accommodation.

The demonstration, on social media platforms with the hashtag, #FixKnustHostelPrices and on campus, is to demand that Management intervenes to stop the high cost of accommodation by Private Hostels around the University.

Some students who hit the streets on campus today Friday July 16, kept chanting, “the son of the charcoal seller should have an accommodation” as they held placards with inscriptions such as, “Hostel prices higher than school fees? Poor students matter”.

This is as a result of the high hostel prices around the KNUST Vicinity. The rent charges by some hostels, per annum, are as high as GH₵10,000.00 for executive rooms and GH₵9,000 for standard rooms. The least charge for a standard room is GH₵3,500.
Ultimately, the University management according to a statement signed by the University Relations Office, Dr. Daniel Norris Bekoe, has revealed plans by management to build more hostels on campus to ease the accommodation challenges.
According to the statement sighted by Thrillernewsgh.com, management of the University are in talks with three (3) private investors for the contruction of new hostels beginning next academic year.
The management of the University has alao assured students and the general public that every effort is being made to provide decent and secured accomodation for students on campus.
“Discussions are ongoing with three (3) private investors for the construction of hostels beginning next academic year”, the statement said.

Meanwhile, the University Relations Officer, Dr. Daniel Norris Bekoe has disclosed in a conversation with JoyNews and monitored by Thriller News GH that the university has entered into 55 agreements with private developers who want to build hostels on campus.
According to him, three of the developers will commence work in September this year.
“They are going to build something like a 20,000-bed capacity hostel. We have also been appealing to investors that if you want to invest in something so profitable, you can come to KNUST, we will give you land. You build, operate for about 45 years then you transfer the property to the university,” he further stated.
