The Graduate Students Association of Ghana at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology has indefinitely suspended its 2021 general elections.
In a press release signed by the Electoral Commissioner of the Association, Sidik Abubakar on Thursday, July 8, 2021, the elections which were supposed to happen on the 9th and 10th of this month will not take place because of an incident that took place at the Great Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology involving members from the Unity Hall, popularly known as Conti, and the University Hall (Katanga).
The vetting of aspirants for this year’s Student Representative Council (SRC) elections at the University went south as members of the two halls clashed on Saturday, July 3, 2021.
The clash resulted in the injury of some students and the destruction of some school properties.
One student sustained some minor injuries in his palm from a broken bottle and is currently receiving treatment at the University’s hospital.
Management of the University thereafter suspended all election-related activities till further notice.
According to a statement signed by the Electoral Commission of the SRC, “the University Management has set up a committee to probe further into the happenings. They have been tasked to provide guidelines for successful completion of this election and also, to bring the culprits to justice.”
The statement further disclosed that the Management of the university has instructed election-related activities to proceed only after the investigation which is supposed to happen within 3 weeks.
It then urged students to go about their normal activities on campus as the SRC Electoral Commission is liaising with management to ensure the smooth running of all activities.
