Many keen followers of student politics have in the past bemoaned the high rate of political infiltration in the leadership of student unions – a situation that once led to a divided NUGS front.

But delivering his speech at a swearing-in ceremony for NUGS, USAG and NAHSAG elected national officers on Tuesday, June 29, 2021, Emmanuel Boakye Yiadom said that NUGS will not be a puppet in the hands of political parties

“The National Union of Ghana Students will not be an extension of the youth wing of any political party. We are not going to be agents of the government or tools for the opposition. We shall not relent to chastise or applaud when the need be,” he said.

Emmanuel Boakye Yiadom also bemoaned the sorry state of the NUGS office located at the University of Ghana, City campus.

He lamented that some former NUGS executives who secured some monies to renovate the build failed to do so.

He cautioned that the student union will not hesitate to expose individuals who may have been found to be culpable in the misappropriation of funds

“A Union which is 56 years don’t have a working and functional Secretariat yet people throw themselves about jumping from office to office seeking for funds as leaders of the Union and I keep asking myself what happened to those funds? It’s been rumored that past administrations have received funds from GETFUND to renovate the office space at the University of Ghana City campus but there’s absolutely nothing to show as the office is in its worst shape and state. We call on the EOCO to help us in this regard. We are not going to shield any individual who has taken undue advantage of the Union. We are going to name and shame if the need be. This is a word of caution to everyone in possession of anything belonging to the Union. Kindly return it before it’s late,” he warned.

Emmanuel Boakye Yiadom further appealed to the government and other organizations to support the Union and give its office a facelift.

“We can’t continue running the Association in restaurants, hotels, our homes, and cars. This is not acceptable. We hereby call on the alumni (past Presidents and executives), government and non-governmental agencies to come to our aid to renovate the office space,” he appealed.
