Samuel Sesah, President of the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of the Kwame Mkrumah University of Science and Technology on Saturday May 8 asked students not to pay any GUSSS hostel fees for the 2021/ 2022 academic year.

Explaining the rationale for this decision, The SRC President, Master Samuel Sesah said in a tweet sighted by Thrillernewsgh.com, “there’s the need to avoid outrageous increments in a time like this.”
This follows the release of accommodation prices by GUSSS hostel management for the 2021/2022 academic year. Many students have described the newly released hostel fees as very unauthentic and unreasonable. Others have also accused GUSSS Hostel Managers operating within the KNUST vicinity of taking advantage of the students challenges in securing accommodation to charge astronomical prices and increase existing hostel fees illogically.

Per the new hostel prices by GUSSS hostel management, the amount for
- 2 in 1 room has increased from 4,055 to 4,670.
- 2 in 2 from 3,380 to 3,950.
- 3 in 1 from 2,975 to 3,505 and
- 4 in 1 from 2,420 to 2,915.

Subsequently, The SRC President has asked all students not to make any payment until the unfair and unjustifiable increase in prices is addressed.
“No Student wishing to stay in the Gusss Hostel should make any payment for now. While we are confident the GUSSS leadership will reduce the price, there’s the need to avoid outrageous increments in a time like this,” he said.

The KNUST SRC Parliamentary Council has also urged students not to pay the hostel fees as they go into negotiations with management to push against these exorbitant hostel prices.

The price is too much. They should have mercy for the students.
