Some students of the Ghana Institute of Journalism have filed a case at an Accra High court against the management of the Institute for declaring them as illegitimate SRC executives.
The plaintiffs, who were appointed by the then SRC administration led by Joseph Agbezuke, want the court to declare that the action of the management of the Institute in setting them aside was unwarranted as it had no mandate to “interfere in the affairs of the Students Representative Council”.
They also want a 15-member interim SRC committee set up to organize election for substantive leaders to be declared as “unconstitutional, null and void and of no legal effect”
In February this year, Management of the Ghana Institute of Journalism declared that it will not recognize students who were appointed as executives of the school’s Students Representative Council as they were not duly elected.
These students were appointed by the Joseph Agbezuke-led SRC administration.
School authorities, in a communique, said that their appointment was “alien to the SRC constitution and in any case, did not follow the procedure for the selection of student leaders as stipulated in the GIJ SRC constitution”
Rector of the Institute, Prof. Kwamena Kwansah-Aidoo subsequently ordered that elections should be held to select students who will act on an interim basis “to put in place structures, institutions and a timetable for the conduct of elections” for substantive leaders.
