The University of Ghana chapter of the Volta Region Students’ Association (UG-VORSA), has threatened to embark on a demonstration to register their displeasure over what they call, a “long-standing discrimination towards Ewes and the use of various tools to propagate such tribalistic innuendos.”
This follows offensive comments found in textbooks referring to Ewes as discriminatory and ‘juju men’ among other derogatory comments.
The release of these books has generated a lot of tension among the entire Ewe populace, most of whom believe it’s an attempt to bring the image of Ewes under disreputes.
Speaking to UniversNews, President of UG-VORSA, Mr. Daniel Walters Abusah, expressed his disappointment over what he termed as a “deliberate attempt by the Ghana Education Service (GES) to tarnish the image of the Ewes.”
“The textbooks are supposed to go through some procedural provisions and meet some necessary standards before they are approved. So if they have met those approvals and they have been admitted into the schools, it means GES agrees with those views that are painted on the ewes, which is derogatory and unprofessional” he told UniversNews.
He further explained that “our decision to demonstrate is to call back the books from the system and remove all derogatory comments against Ewes from all existing ones”
Meanwhile, the National Council for Curriculum Assessment (NaCCA) has announced that the books have not been approved for use in schools.
This was indicated in a press release from NaCCA asking publishers of the books to withdraw them from the market.
“In each of these books and others discovered on social media, the authors make inappropriate references to personalities and ethnic groups which are deemed unfortunate distasteful and are in contradiction with NaCCA’s Book Submission Guidelines,” The statement said.
