The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology has announced that it is accepting applications from less privileged students to help them pursue their University Education with the support of its One Needy Student, One Laptop Project (SONSOL).

The project is in line with the Vice Chancellor’s vision to support needy students in the University. According to the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Rita Akosua Dickson, it has become necessary to build a robust and resilient e-system together with diverse online platforms to enhance teaching, learning and research.

Speaking at a meeting with Senior Members of the six Colleges of the University to unveil her vision for the school, she explained that the move comes on the back of the effects of the pandemic on academic work.

“There are plans of increasing access to ICT and digitization infrastructure particularly about the role of ICT in teaching and learning. The Coronavirus caused academic work to be moved online therefore, it has become needful for the inclusion of Smart Technologies for synchronous and asynchronous teaching, learning, assessments, and research and virtual and augmented reality labs for 3D-aided learning. For this cause, KNUST, with the help of philanthropists, would introduce the “SONSOL PROJECT” to support one needy student with one laptop,” she said.

She disclosed that the school will establish an Enterprise Development Unit (EDU) to coordinate and commercialize research and findings.

In the perspective to roll out ‘impactful Research and Innovations’, Prof. Dickson indicated that the institution will create a Young Researchers Forum (YRF) intended to acquire skills in Grantsmanship, Teaching and Research Communications.

She further added that her outfit envisioned introducing the Vice-Chancellor’s Industry Biannual Encounter (VIBE Meetings) as well as enhancing Library Research Support Services.

ELIGIBILITY

  1. Brilliant, but needy students
  2. The support is open to only Ghanaian Students, including Students from IDL, Obuasi Campus and from all Colleges
  3. The support is for First to Third (1st to 3rd) Year Undergraduate students only. Final Year students are not eligible
  4. The support is for Undergraduate Students only, Postgraduates are not eligible
  5. For Newly Admitted Students, (First Year), a maximum WASSCE aggregate of 18.
  6. For Continuing students, a Cumulated Weighted Average (CWA) of 55.00 and above
  7. Students already benefitting from scholarships from Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, GNPC, Tullow, MTN Foundation, Vodafone, EPI, Edu. Fund, GET-Fund, MP Common Fund, District Assembly Support or any other Scholarship or Bursary above GHC 2,000.00 are NOT Eligible.

REQUIREMENTS

All prospective applicants are to include the following documents in their applications:

  1. All applicants should provide/write Proof of Need
  2. Admission Letter
  3. Acceptance Letter
  4. Results Slip showing current CWA. (Signed and Stamped by the Examinations Officer). And WASSCE Certificate (first years only)
  5. Awards and Certificates for involvement in extra-curricular activity (if any)

PLEASE NOTE:

  • All documents must be in a sealed envelope with the Applicant’s name, programme and phone number boldly written on it.
  • Submission of documents should be done at the Students Affairs and Financial Services (Room 19) at the Dean of Students Office, J Harper Building.
  • Any write-up should be typed with the font Times New Roman, size 12 and double-spaced.
  • No Application will be accepted after the deadline. Only shortlisted applicants will be called for interview.

  1. Am daring need of a laptop, and am using this platform to solicit for one. The issue of student having a laptop is crucial in our academic context. It roles in the field of academia cannot be under pinned .

    1. Submission of documents should be done at the Students Affairs and Financial Services (Room 19) at the Dean of Students Office, J Harper Building.

  2. Please how are we to provide our acceptance letters as part of the requirement which we already submitted during our application process.
    We submitted our acceptance letters through EMS, so I don’t know how we are supposed to provide this requirement.
    Could you help us out
