Two students of the University of Ghana were on Tuesday, August 11, 2020, prevented from taking their Numeracy Skills (UGRC 120) supplementary resit paper as their names could not be found in the list of those who had registered for the exams.
The separate incidents happened at the School of Continuing and Distance Education and the School of Communication centres.
According to these students, they had registered for the exams and were at the centre assigned them but their credentials could not be found in the system when they reported at their respective exam venues.
One of the affected students, who spoke to UniversNews with plea of anonymity narrated that:
“They came with the attendance, they first asked me to enter my ID and pin. They went to the site but couldn’t find the course code; it wasn’t appearing at all. They asked me for my name and they checked the attendance book to see if I was part but I wasn’t part so a man asked me to follow him and we came to another center but unfortunately it wasn’t part. I gave him my index number and pin and he logged onto STS to check if I’ve paid. I have paid alright but it wasn’t appearing because I registered for the First semester re-sit exam.”
Meanwhile, Chief Invigilator at the School of Agriculture Leventis Computer Laboratory centre, Dr. Maxwell Billah, says that the exam has so far taken off smoothly at his end.
“I think the arrangement made so far is good, so far we have not run out of invigilators, we have not run out of invigilating assistants or coordinators. It’s been good. The nature of the lab, they are not too big so there is more control. We are able to better assist than in writing in a bigger hall,” he told RadioUnivers.
Dr. Billah was also of the believe that the early migration of academic activities of the University onto its online learning system has helped students get familiarized with the process.
“Since the lockdown we have been doing many of these things online. Most of them now have gotten used to working online. It’s much better than the initial stages when everybody just came in and was trying their hand.” he said.
Commenting on the matter of some students who could not find their names among the list of those who registered for Thursday’s Numeracy Skills paper, Dr. Billah advised that students confirm their centres at least 24 hours before time.
This, he believes, will prevent the situation of students reporting at the wrong examination venue.
“They always don’t look for where they are supposed to write the exam. Assuming 60 people are writing, the labs are small, maybe a maximum of 20 people are permitted in the lab so they divide them into three different labs. Sometimes they come and tell you, ‘my friend says we are writing here’ meanwhile, you don’t fall in that range. They don’t actually read for themselves but they depend on friends,” he added.
