The SRC General Assembly at the University of Ghana is set to meet today, May 24, to hold further deliberations concerning a verdict by the SRC Judicial Board which found the President of the SRC guilty on two counts of constitutional breaches.
The Judicial Board on Friday resolved that the SRC President, Isaac Agyemang had breached two provisions of the SRC Constitution out of six(6) allegations which were leveled against him by a group of petitioners, thereby making him liable for impeachment.
The Board found the SRC President guilty of;
1. Having breached Article 51(1) which mandates the president to cause and present the semester budget for every academic year before the General Assembly at the beginning of each semester.
2. Procedural breaches involving the withdrawal and use of some funds without recourse to Articles 51(1), 52(5) and 14(5) which require the General Assembly’s approval or a supplementary budget in instances where funds approved are inadequate.
The Board, upon these grounds, arrived at a decision that the General Assembly may begin processes of impeachment against Isaac Agyemang.
The General Assembly consequently has released a notice summoning its members for an emergency virtual sitting today, May 24 at 5pm to proceed with the recommendations of the Judicial Board.
Even before the Assembly served a notice of an emergency meeting, a Univers News source in the General Assembly indicated that the lead petitioner John Baffuor Senkyire had prayed the House to take action in accordance with the Constitution.
The said prayer is reproduced in full below:
Mr. Speaker, the Clerk, Honourable Members, as many of us already know a few months ago, my good self alongside my brother and friend Godsway Obro-Boateng and our sister Victoria Antwi launched an impeachment case against Isaac Agyemang for negligence in discharging and the ‘vanishing’ of some amounts of money he Isaac Agyemang failed to prove how they were used.
After months of battling, the Justices of the Court have found two counts of impeachable offenses in our favour and have established a Prima Facie case, thereby giving the House the green light for the impeachment and subsequent removal from office in accordance with the constitution.
I therefore as the 1st petitioner of the above stated Impeachment case and as a member of this House humbly inform the House of this new development and pray the Clerk to call for an emergency virtual meeting within the next 7 to 8 hours to debate and the subsequently vote on the matter, whether to acquit or spare the President for his negligence and disrespect for procedure and law or will make history and set a precedent to vote for the impeachment of a man who has no regard for the laws of the land,no respect for the virginity of the public purse, and a legitimately elected or appointed Legislative body that checks on the Executive body
