Sylvia Abena Peprah is a deaf and blind student who has graduated with First Class honours from the University of Education winneba (UEW).
The 30-year-old lady, pursued a a two-year diploma programme in Community-Based Rehabilitation and Disability Studies. She was one of the 16,489 students who graduated from the UEW 2017/2018 academic year.
Speaking at the university’s 24th Congregation, Vice Chancellor of UEW, Rev. Father. Prof. Anthony Afful Broni opined that Slyvia has proved to the Ghana and the world that the loss of both her sight and hearing is not a barrier.
He revealed that the university will support her by paying her accommodation and tuition fees for her post-diploma education. The VC said, the UEW is the first institution in Ghana to graduate a deaf and blind student. He revealed that the institution will continue to admit and train many more young adults with different disabilities. He noted that the University of Education Winneba will offer disabled students the unique opportunity.
“No one should take advantage of you by using you to do their dirty jobs. Be yourself, the amazing strong and smart young men and women that you have become” he told the students at the graduation ceremony.
