GHANA NAVY LIFT’S GHANA RED CROSS @90 TROPHY IN SEKONDI.The Ghana Red Cross Society exits to provide humanitarian services to the affected, needy and marginalized in society devoid of discrimination.
The presence of Red Cross was felt in Ghana some 90 years ago and has since not turn it back to first Aid training and provision of humanitarian service.As part of activities marking the 90 years celebration, the Western Regional branch of the Society outlined a series of activities including health walk and soccer, playing cards, playing of draft, 100 meters dash and sack race among security agencies in the nation’s oil rich capital, Sekondi-Takoradi.Participating teams were drawn from the Ghana Police, Prisons, Navy, Fire Service and the Red Cross team.The acting Regional manager, Benjamin Acquah, in his welcome address made it clear that 90 years of continuous humanitarianism is indeed a course to celebrate and that the Ghana Red Cross has come a long way and will continue to stand by its guidance principles of impartiality, neutrality, voluntary service and universality. He further indicated that the society has over the years discharged its mandate through transparency, honesty and in non partisan manner. He used the opportunity to ask all and sundry to acquire basic first Aid training to which the society is offering at no cost.The regional manager said Red Cross do not charge for its services and call on individuals, institutions, media, philanthropist, Nananom and organisations to partner the society to discharge its services.Kick off was done by the Regional Vice Chairman, Mr Frank Ofosu-Asante who made a passionate appeal for government to consider setting up “Ghana Aid” comparable to USAID, UKAID and DANIDA to ensure prompt disaster response since nobody world over is insulated form such unpredictable events. He said “the Red Cross has the capacity and capability to lead in this regard “
The vice chairman also made reference to the recent flooding in Accra and some countries in Southern part of Africa where relief items, food, water and medicals had to reach displaced people and ask that emergency response teams be strengthened to deliver on their core mandate.
The event which was held at the Sekondi methodist school park saw Ghana Navy becoming the champions and took home a giant trophy with Police being the runners up.
