Two Ghanaian universities have been named among the world’s top higher education institutions in the newly released QS World University Rankings 2026.
The University of Ghana and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) were listed among more than 1,500 universities ranked globally by QS (Quacquarelli Symonds), a UK-based higher education analytics and insight firm.
The University of Ghana was placed in the 851–900 range, while KNUST appeared in the 1201–1400 range, maintaining their presence on the prestigious global list.
The annual QS rankings assess universities across key performance indicators, including academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty-student ratio, research citations per faculty, and international faculty and student ratios.
In 2026, QS introduced a new metric called ‘international student diversity’ to reflect the growing emphasis on inclusive and globally engaged campuses.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the U.S. retained the top position for the 14th consecutive year. It was followed by Imperial College London in the second spot and Stanford University in third.
Other institutions in the top 10 include the University of Oxford, Harvard University, and the National University of Singapore.
Ghana is one of the few countries in sub-Saharan Africa with universities represented in the rankings, which continue to be dominated by institutions in the United States, United Kingdom, and East Asia. The University of Cape Town (ranked No. 150) was the highest-ranking African university overall.
According to QS, the rankings are designed to help prospective students, educators, and policymakers evaluate institutional performance and identify leading centers of academic excellence worldwide.
In total, 54 African universities were included in the 2026 edition, representing countries such as South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria, Kenya, and Ghana.
Ghana’s institutions continued appearance signals a level of consistency and visibility in global higher education.
Both universities have expanded their international partnerships, research output, and graduate programs in recent years.
