The University of Ghana Students Representative Council is advocating for academic fees to be reduced by 15 percent for the 2020/2021 academic year.
Preferably, they want students to be billed with the same fees they paid for the 2019/2020 academic year, or students should be given interest-free loans to help them pay the 2020/2021 fees.
Acting UG-SRC President, Nana Kwame Ntow-Fianko indicated these in an interview with Radio Univers.
According to him, the SRC has already engaged the government on the matter.
“There are some stakeholders we had an engagement with like the Ministry of Education, Chief of Staff, and the National Commission for Tertiary Education. The reason why we had to associate with NUGS is that it’s our mother body and they are the highest authority when it comes to student affairs. We are asking that last year’s fees should be maintained or government should absorb a certain percent of this year’s fees or the students that will be taking loans this particular year be given their loans without any interest,” he said.
Meanwhile, Nana Kwame Ntow-Fianko has urged students to be patient as it is yet to be certain when school will reopen for academic activities.
He assured that the SRC will not hesitate to inform students when the portal for academic registration is opened.
“If a day is agreed to be the day that portal is open for students to start the registration process, we will release the information to students to begin registration processes, if there is going to be an approval as to when tertiary should resume it all be dependent from the government initiative, He added.
