UNWTO Masterclass: State actors, entrepreneurs, students meet together to promote tourism through women empowerment

The Ghana Association of Tourism and Hospitality Students (GATS) joined the many dignitaries to have a successful tourism summit. The program which took place on Monday, November 25,2019 between the hours of 11:30 AM- 1:00 PM GMT at the Ghana-Indian Kofi Annan Centre for Excellence in ICT, Accra was in line with the official Launching of the Regional Congress on Women’s Empowerment in the Tourism Sector which is focused in Africa.

The Official Launch was honored by the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the first lady of Zimbabwe, Her Excellency Auxilla Mnangagwa, the Sector Minister for Tourism, Art and CUlture, Mrs. Barbara Oteng Gyasi and the UNWTO Secretary-General, Zurab Pololikashvili….among others.

The many dignitaries reiterated on the theme for the gathering in their speeches that women must be empowered in the tourism industry. The Honorable Minister for the Tourism sector, Mrs. Barbara Oteng Gyasi said “In 20yrs to come women will take over the tourism industry. This cause for an immediate response to empower the women to the standard required.” The men were not left out. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia spoke about the government planning to invest a 1.2billion Ghana cedis in the Marine project which expected to create over 600,000 jobs in the tourism industry.

Some members of the Ghana Association of Tourism and Hospitality Students were present, among them were some of the executives, Mr. Isaac Frempong(President), Mr. Dennis Blewussi(PRO), Mr. Kingsley Badiako(Organizing Secretary) and Master Bismark Osei Asomani(Editor-in-chief)

Other agencies and popular associations were also present, TourCareGh, Tourism Society of Ghana, Ghana Tourism Authority, Ghana Tourism Federation and the Mother institution, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture.

According to the President of the Ghana Association of Tourism and Hospitality Students, the purpose of GATS’ involvement in the Launching of the Regional Congress on Women’s Empowerment, specifically the UNWTO Masterclass in tourism was to equip the students chapter in ICT skills since technology is taking over the tourism industry and also to familiarize themselves(GATS) with the various industry players.

He stated that GATS were given 30 slots under the conference which unfortunately were not exhausted. The Masterclass ICT training was organized in line with the conference to equip basically ladies in computer literacy.

Certain recommendations were made by some of the industry players to GATS. The executives were admonished to compile the list of all members of the Association as a database for quick referencing and program organization.

Again, they (GATS) were told to host some periodic programs like what was organized to empower the members, this suggestion was made by the winner of Miss United Nations Grand Prix 2019, who promised to honour any invitation from GATS                       .

Certain dignitaries also applauded GATS for how far they have come as an association.
